The origin of swimming dates as far back as history records. In 1993, cave paintings were discovered in Egypt depicting people swimming, and those cave paintings mean the oldest swimming pool dates back thousands of years! So when were swimming pools invented and how has water recreation evolved through the millennia?

In this post, we explore the origins of swimming pools to the modern pools we enjoy today. Mankind has gone from swimming in rivers and caves to building custom pools with waterfalls, waterslides, hot tubs, and more. Below is a brief history of the swimming pool from the custom swimming pool builders at Stevenson Brothers.

Origins of swimming - Historic ancient roman pools in Pakistan where the worlds oldest swimming pool was invented

The Ancient Origins of Pools

The earliest recorded structure resembling a swimming pool was made in modern-day Pakistan nearly five thousand years ago. Between 3000 and 2000 BC, The Great Baths of Mohenjodaro were built using plaster-covered bricks sealed with tar and surrounded by terraced decks. It’s surmised that the baths were used more for religious rites than recreation.

Between 800 and 600 BC, the Ancient Romans created what resembles our modern idea of a swimming pool. These historic swimming pools were meant for recreation rather than religious ceremonies. Not long after (between 300 and 100 BC), the Romans utilized methods of water circulation through aqueducts to replenish pools with fresh water. Ancient Roman pools also used sophisticated heating methods to warm the water so the experience was more comfortable and refreshing.

The Romans are the historic equivalent of luxury pool builders. In 75 AD, the Romans conquered Britain and brought with them ritual bathing and recreational swimming. They built a large religious spa called Aquae Sulis, which is modern-day Bath, Somerset. The pool was used for healing, worship, and bathing and can still be toured today.

Early Swimming Pools in America and England

During the Middle Ages, enthusiasm for swimming pools and public bathing floundered. It was believed these spaces were breeding grounds for disease, so they were commonly avoided. It wasn’t until the 19th century that public pools saw a resurgence in popularity.

By 1837, six public swimming pools with diving boards existed in London, England. The Maidstone Swimming Club, founded in Kent in 1844, is believed to be the oldest surviving swimming club in Britain. More swimming clubs appeared in the coming years, such as the Amateur Swimming Association in 1869 and the Oxford Swimming Club in 1909.

Swimming pools came to the United States in 1868. The first American swimming pool was the Cabot Street Bath in Boston, Massachusetts. It was built to function as a bath house because it resided in a poor neighborhood where few people had baths in their homes and public officials wanted working-class locals to have a place to bathe. However, the facilities often suffered from sanitation problems.

During this period, swimming pool and bath house hygiene were difficult to manage. Pool owners would let pool water sit for long periods before the water would get drained and replaced. Modern filtration methods weren’t invented until 1910, so swimming pools remained stagnant until the pool was drained and filled with fresh water.

From a recreational standpoint, swimming saw a breakthrough at the turn of the 20th century. In 1900, the Paris Olympics featured a swimming obstacle course, which has never been reimplemented. In 1904, Olympic diving was instituted and in the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, women’s swimming events were included. Now, swimming events are commonplace in Olympic competitions, featuring competitors worldwide.

The Rise of Modern Pools

In 1907, the Racquet Club of Philadelphia built an above-ground swimming pool to be used by its private club members. This is believed to be the first swimming pool in America. In 1910, Deep Eddy in Texas was made into America’s first in-ground swimming pool, and it’s still in use today.

The rise of modern pools also opened the door for swimming fashion. Early swimming fashion was conservative and modest. Women were encouraged to wear long wool dresses when attending the public pool. Annette Kellerman was an Australian swimmer who was arrested for wearing a one-piece swimming suit in Boston in 1907, but in the coming decades, one-piece swimming suits would become commonplace. Two-piece swimming suits grew in popularity due to decreased fabric production during World War II.

By the 1950s, Americans had fully embraced swimming as a leisurely activity, especially during hot summer months. Hollywood depictions of private pools in movies fed a growing demand for private pools across the United States. Homeowners from Los Angeles to Boston saw a backyard swimming pool as a status symbol and a convenient place to cool off during the summer. In 1975, President Gerald Ford had a private pool built by the White House in Washington, D.C.

Swimming Pools Today

Today, there are nearly 10 million swimming pools across the United States—some public and some private. Public swimming pools have become commonplace in major cities and often include features like diving boards and long water slides.

At-home swimming pools have also become popular. Custom swimming pools have become fixtures in affluent neighborhoods where homeowners can bring neighbors and friends to gather and celebrate. Custom pools can be constructed to match the home’s aesthetic with fixtures like waterfalls, slides, hot tubs, and more. Thankfully, modern pools include filtration and cleaning methods that would make ancient pool enjoyers green with envy.
